Described by The Times as “a flautist with finesse, variety of sound, intelligence and dignity”, Roderick Seed is 25 years old and recently made his début at Carnegie Hall in New York as a result of winning the 1st prize at the Alexander & Buono International Flute competition.
Roderick is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he won the “Paddy Purcell Award” – an Entrance Scholarship - to study with William Bennett, Kate Hill and Patricia Morris (piccolo). He has previously studied with Sebastian Bell, principal flute of the London Sinfonietta.
Prior to beginning his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Roderick was principal flute of the West Sussex County Orchestra for 3 years, with whom he toured England, Germany and Hungary as soloist in Malcolm Arnold’s Flute Concerto. More recently, he has played guest principal flute with the London Octave (principal members of the English Chamber Orchestra and Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields). He has worked with conductors such as Yan-Pascal Tortelier, Leif Segerstam and Thierry Fischer and played alongside flautists such as William Bennett and Denis Bouriakov.
Roderick has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in many recitals and concerts at venues such as Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall; St Martin in the Fields; the cathedrals of Westminster, Chichester and Arundel; St. James’s Church, Piccadilly; at Snape Maltings as part of the Aldeburgh Festival; and at the British Flute Society International Flute Convention 2010, where he premiered a work by Eddie McGuire, entitled "Fantasia". He won the solo prize at the London Concerto Competition, which led to premiering a work by Nimrod Borenstein, with the composer conducting. Other prizes he has won include the BFS Award at the British Flute Society Silver Jubilee Competition and the Prairie Crossing Festival Prize.
Roderick also enjoys playing chamber music and participating in master classes. In the master class situation, he has been taught by William Bennett, Jonathan Snowden, Lorna McGhee, Emily Beynon and Maxence Larrieu, where he has also worked with distinguished composers such as Jean-Michel Damase and Ian Clarke on their compositions for flute. Roderick organised and played in the June 2006 Emmanuel Pahud master class at London’s Henry Wood Hall and recently played in a class given by violinist David Takeno.
Roderick has been Teaching Assistant and recitalist at the William Bennett International Flute Summer School in 2009 and 2010. He has also given masterclasses at the Lizst Academy in Budapest, Hungary and for the Royal Muscat Philharmonic Orchestra in Oman. Roderick is now an Altus Artist with Altus Flutes Europe. He plays an Altus flute with a headjoint made my Miguel Arista. He has accepted a full scholarship to study at UBC School of Music in Canada with Lorna McGhee and Brenda Fedoruk for a Master's Degree.
Of his performance of the Poulenc Sonata, William Bennett wrote : "Roderick set an entirely new level for playing this work. Every phrase was a jewel; the pitch and rhythm were perfect, and the whole piece shown with a harlequin coat of tone colours".
